Voter Preferences, Polarization, and Electoral Policies
A probabilistic voting model with voter utility functions that are not necessarily concave is examined. When voters are polarized, there is a convexity threshold of their utility function below which policy convergence is a unique equilibrium, and above which policy divergence is a unique equilibrium. Divergent equilibrium is more likely when voters become more polarized. Social welfare is maxi...

The first tool we propose is an electoral rule where the number of candidates elected depends on the level of participation. The second tool we propose is a participation quorum that has to be met in order for the election to be valid. In both cases we characterize all possible eq...

American electoral volatility is in a free fall. Overtime variation in the partisan balance of presidential elections across states has matched an all-time low in American history and is a fraction of its 1970’s peak. The current decline in volatility parallels declines during the Gilded Age and Franklin Roosevelt’s presidency. Trends in electoral volatility vary regionally, and the South’s pat...
